Aquaponics
Aquaponics is the production of vegetables and fish which live in a symbiotic relationship. The simplest explanation I can give is that teh fish provide the fertilizer for the plants to grow, and the plants, beneficial bacteria, and composting worms clean the water for teh fish.
One of the beauties of Aquaponics is that it's totally scalable. The processes that wrok in a backyard sized system also work with a fish tank and a pot. So you can have an Aquaponics system in almost any space, and of any size. you're only limited by your imagination. There is no wrong way to make a system, you just have to maintain the balance between fish, bio-filter and plants. It's a natural organic process not unlike what occours in streams and waterways.
Wicking Beds
Wicking Beds are a raised bed that has it's own water reservoir in the bottom. This means that you will use approximately 75% less water than a triditional dirt garden or raised bed dirt garden. Raised beds dry out aster then native ground and you need to water them more often than a regular dirt garden. Just like growing in posts, they need more water more often. Wicking beds are great for retired individuals and wheelchair bound people. Wicking beds are higher than the traditional raised beds, this makes for less bending and back strain. Wicking beds warm up in the spring quicker and stay warmer later into the fall, they have less weeds and less pests. Wicking beds can utilize a cold frame cover to extend the growing season.
